Project Brief
PETRONAS's "Slang That Unites Us" campaign aims to encourage Malaysians to appreciate Vernacular Schools as spaces of cultural diversity and heritage. Although the campaign doesn't promote enrollment, it highlights the role of these schools in
fostering unity and preserving Malaysia's multicultural identity.


The Slang that Unites Us” is a short film about students from diverse backgrounds who overcome language barriers and cultural differences. Assigned by their teacher to create a poster about Malaysian slang,
they bond over shared experiences and learn the importance of cultural understanding. The film ends with the powerful message: “Slang is our shared language, to communicate, to unite us.”

Insight
Many Malaysians, particularly within the Malay community, perceive Vernacular Schools as exclusive to certain ethnic groups, which they feel may hinder national unity. This campaign seeks to challenge that perception by illustrating how Vernacular Schools can promote understanding and inclusivity.

Idea
The Slang that Unites Us" is a short film and poster drawing activity that uses Malaysian slang as a metaphor for unity within Vernacular Schools. The film showcases stucents from various cultural backgrounds-Malay, Chinese and Indian- who come together despite language differences and find common ground through Malaysian slang. In a country as diverse as Malaysia, slang acts as a unique shared language. blending words from different cultures. This campaign demonstrates how, like Malaysian slang, the diversity within Vernacular Schools can foster understanding, connection, and unity. The film concludes with the message: "Slang is our shared language, to communicate, to unite us.

Impact
In a two-hour poster activity, 81 students from diverse backgrounds greated posters celebrating Malaysian slang. These colorful posters showcased their creativity and appreciation for cultural diversity, reinforcing the campaign's message that Malaysian
slang and Vernacular Schools help bridge cultural divides, fostering unity and respect.

An interactive poster-making activity, students will explore Malaysian slang to visually represent expressions that promote unity among different races. Through hands-on engagement, they’ll deepen their understanding of slang’s role in fostering cultural appreciation and unity.

Each piece represents a unique Malaysian slang expression, showcasing creativity and unity. This artwork celebrates collaboration and the power of language in Malaysia’s diverse culture.
