THE CAMOUFLAGE OF AUTISM
The Camouflage of Autism is a response to ISTD Brief 5 of interaction. This publication explores the complexities of autism, from the neurological differences that shape perception and communication to the hidden cost of camouflaging in daily life. Through an in-depth look at nonlinear thinking, sensory experiences, late diagnosis, and social expectations, it sheds light on both the strengths and challenges of being autistic. By understanding these perspectives, we can move toward a more accepting and inclusive society-one that values neurodiversity and allows everyone to thrive as their authentic selves.
Mindmap
After reading through all the briefs, I found interaction to be a fascinating concept, as it plays a significant role in shaping our daily lives. Interaction is everywhere—from the way we communicate with others, use technology, and engage with our surroundings to how we experience design itself. It connects people, enhances understanding, and drives innovation. I believe exploring this theme will allow me to delve into how interaction influences behaviour, fosters relationships, and creates meaningful experiences. By choosing this theme for my ISTD brief, I aim to uncover the nuances of interaction and showcase its potential to bridge gaps and bring people closer together.
Primary Research
I designed a bingo card featuring traits commonly associated with autistic adults, inviting participants to reflect on how many traits they identified with. This interactive activity made learning engaging while encouraging empathy and understanding of autistic experiences. I am grateful to my classmates who participated and shared thoughtful responses that enriched my research.
The results showed that many participants, regardless of being autistic or not, related to several traits. This suggests that behaviors like camouflaging or hiding one’s true self to fit in are more common than often assumed. Many described feeling emotionally drained after masking to be accepted socially. These insights reveal the emotional toll of camouflaging and highlight how widespread it is. This research contributes to my book by showing that the tendency to hide one’s true self is a shared human experience. It promotes empathy, self-acceptance, and more genuine social connections.

Production
I plan to emboss my book cover because camouflage represents something hidden, and I believe embossing fits this concept perfectly. I attended an embossing workshop at Bower, which was my first time trying it. The overall experience was enjoyable.
I chose perfect binding for my book because it allows the pages to open fully, ensuring a seamless reading experience.
